Truth Tuesday- 1 Timothy 1:8-11

1 Timothy 1:8
But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully,

If we use the law as it is suppose to be used, everything works well and it accomplishes what it needs to.  Notice that it doesn't say the law is good all the time, just when it is used legally.  So when the people used to do lynchings in the name of the "law," it was not good law.

1 Timothy 1:9
knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for the murderers of fathers and the murderers of mothers, for manslayers

1 Timothy 1:10
for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is anything contrary to sound doctrine

The law wasn't given to show the righteous how good they are (by not "breaking" it [this could be by definitions or "loop holes"]), but for those who break it to show that none of us are good and all need the grace of God.  Paul starts out with broad terms, to include everyone (he earlier mentioned in Romans 3:11 that none seeks after God [so everyone is deemed unholy by default]).  He then starts to narrow the scope to those who most would point the finger at and say "you deserve God's wrath" (murderers, sexually immoral, homosexual, slave traders), but does not stop there.  In the same sentence he continues with what every person has committed in some fashion: lying, promise breakers, those who contradict what God has established.  God is not one sided, those who have wronged Him in any form have punishment coming for them.

1 Timothy 1:11
according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.

God trusted Paul to share the gospel with those who are unrighteous, but only after the law was revealed.  The great thing is, is that we are not left in hopelessness.  God came down to earth to redeem us to Him via Jesus dying on the cross and rising again.  This process paid the penalty we deserved.  It is only by Him that we can be free and justified.
